It's Sweet to be Drug Free Power Box
Our Introduction Letter
Broken Arrow Freshman Academy Families:
We have experienced some warm spring days, which has allowed many of our families to implement the activities provided in our March Power Box. We want our families to continue connecting through communication and engaging activities. Be intentional in planning your family activities, even recruiting your student to help coordinate!
During the month of April, we are talking about an illicitly manufactured substance that is on the rise in Oklahoma – fentanyl. These fentanyl-laced counterfeit prescription pills are being marketed to our younger generation. It is important we take a unified approach as a Native community to protect our tribal youth. We are strongly encouraging you to educate yourself beyond our Power Box and have those conversations with your student often.
You can request free NARCAN™ Nasal Spray to have available in case of emergency at https://okimready.org/overdose/.
Since “It’s Sweet to be Drug Free” we have included some sweet family activities on the reverse side of our infographic cards, including an activity to get the conversation started about fentanyl. Each Power Box contains a package of ice cream cones and two candy toppings – you just add the ice cream!
As we start closing out the academic year, Freshman Academy Indian Education Teacher, Sherry Bogart, will be providing students with an anonymous short survey regarding our Power Boxes. We appreciate your family’s continued participation and look forward to your student’s feedback.
We encourage our students to finish the year strong both academically and mentally. If your student would like mental health care, contact Rich Pawpa, Indian Education Coordinator, at 918-259-5773 for a referral to Indian Health Services. If you or someone you know needs mental health support now, call or text 988.
Sincerely,
Bobby Cook

Instruction:
1. Goal Card
The theme this month, “It’s Sweet to be Drug Free,” focuses on an illicitly manufactured substance – fentanyl. Families are encouraged to enjoy a sweet treat, learn about the dangers of fentanyl and play the provided games together.
2. It’s Sweet to be Drug Free Infographic Cards
Each box contains three infographic cards addressing what is fentanyl, how dangerous is fentanyl and where is fentanyl showing up. We encourage parents to help put the lethal dose into perspective by having everyone in the family place 7 grains of salt in their hand.
3. “It’s Sweet to be Drug Free” Games
On the reverse side of our infographic cards, we have provided three separate games. While two games are related to sweet treats, the other game focuses on being drug-free.
4. Opioid Overdose Signs
We are encouraging families to know the signs of an opioid overdose by learning how to spot someone experiencing an overdose and what to do in case of emergency.
5. Sweet Treats
Since our theme is “It’s Sweet to be Drug Free” we thought it was only appropriate to include a package of ice cream cones and two packages of candy toppings (toppings may vary). Families will need to purchase their favorite ice cream flavor to enjoy with the cones and toppings.
